Lettuce issues..again!

What is up with this plant? 3 of the 4 leaves are face down and droopy! Too much light? Too much water? Could it just be the size of the leaves and the weight on the stems?

It looks rather pale yellow and light-starved to me.

The soil doesn't look *too* wet, though I like it to dry out a little more than that between waterings.

Where is the plant in relation to the light, and how my fluorescent lamps do you have over it? (I'm hoping at least two, if not four.)

It's under a shop light that has 2 bulbs. Because of how low the light hangs and how tall the pot is, it's pretty close to the light. When the leaves arent drooping, they can easily touch the bulbs. The pale yellow color might just be the picture. Up close, the leaves are green..I dont see any yellow.

If they are green enough, then I wouldn't worry.

Plants that are grown indoors without moving air tend to be a bit flimsy like that. If it was tougher, more mature plant tissue, then I might be more concerned.

Just keep us posted. I don't think it's an issue right now.

When I have a lot of plants growing I sometimes like to put a small fan on to get them used to some moving air. It makes them a bit sturdier, which is good since they WILL have moving air when they are moved outside. The fan I use is about 7" in diameter, and set on low. If you use a fan, just be aware that the soil will dry out a bit quicker.

That lettuce should be outdoors. Move that pot!

Perhaps the leaves are too close to the bulbs, if you say they can touch them. Generally I think the reccommendation is to keep the bulbs one to two inches above the leaves. Also, too much water might come into play if the soil is close enough to the bulbs that it dries out quickly while the bottom half of the pot stays wet and then you water again, is that something you might be doing? Good luck!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing that natal is saying.

I'm in zone 5 and I'm planning to plant lettuce in my hoophouse right after we get past the current spell of 16 degree lows...

So in your zone I'd already be outside.

But you'll want to accustom your lettuce to the great outdoors over the period of a week or two. They aren't used to wind, sunlight, or outdoor temperatures, so only a couple hours the first day when the light isn't that intense, and work up from there.

I agree - time for a little vacation under the sun for an hour or two.
