Container Gardening

I recently removed all the grass from our front and back yards and replaced with brick, pavers, gravel, etc. I have been planting trees and flowers in various containers. Most is going well. However, I planted a citrus tree in a half wiskey barrel. I put bark on the bottom for good drainage, but neglected to add drainage holes to the barrel. The tree thrived at first (about 10 weeks)then its leaves began to turn yellow and fall off. I realized the problem and drilled holes in the barrel (the stench was awful!). I really want to save this tree. Should I start all over and repot it with new soil or is there something I can do with it as it is. I also found out I was over watering it. As you can tell I am new to gardening - but very much enjoying it! Thanks for your help.
