Using only pine bark in containers?

Here's a question: Can woody plant material be grown in containers using ONLY pine bark? Has anyone tried this?

I've used Al's 5/1/1 mix with good success but I have not tried growing trees or shrubs in pine bark without using the perlite and peat. I recently purchased pine bark mulch in 2cu ft bags from the local Kmart, about $3.00 per bag. The bark is supposedly Ponderosa pine with particle sizes from fine powder to about 1", so I screen this for container use eliminating both the fines and the large pieces.

We have quite a few maple and pine volunteers on our property so I was thinking of digging up a few of these seedlings and placing them in containers filled with unscreened pine bark and seeing what happens. If I try this method should I continue to add dolomitic lime to the pine bark soil? I use Miracle Grow 24-8-16 granular fertilizer for container plants.

Any ideas on how this would work?

Thanks
