I don't want to preface with a huge explanation of my awkward patch. What is important is I have 2ft paths inbetween beds to be able to maneuver myself around, as the garden cannot be accessed from all sides. I can barely keep up with weeding them and it is only early days. My initial plan was to mulch everything with straw and put straw in the paths as well.
What I want to know is can I mulch around the plants with straw and broadcast some green manure in the paths? None of this is permanent, the area is very small and I would like to reorganize next year with this year's experience in mind, so the whole thing will be tilled. Would this just be asking for more weeds? Can I plant like clover or something and walk on it and have it live? Will it cushion where I am walking and protect the soil structure a bit?
If this is asking for trouble, I will just stick to straw-- just trying to think of a better solutions for a strange space.
