You have pulled up the plants and seen the maggots? Otherwise how do you know that is the issue? Pictures would be a big help.

I have encountered cabbage root maggots and they wreck havoc on brassicas, but never had them touch a tomato plant. They are pretty restricted to brassicas. I suspect you have something else.

I saw your pictures in the other thread, I think those are seedcorn maggot flies. You are finding the dead ones because those are infected with a fungus and die on all sorts of plants. They aren't a danger to your tomatoes, but possibly to any large seeds you plant. But that danger might be slim, I had them all over the place this spring and have had no real trouble with anything germinating. Do a web search for "dead flies on plants" and you'll find a couple of other places to read up about them. Cheers!

Thanks so much sunnibel7. I had searched for dead flies on tomatoes before and did not find much. When I changed my search, I found the seedcorn maggot fly. I think that is what they are. Sorry I had a bit of a panic attack since I had bug issues so early when I've never had a problem before. The two do look very similar and when I read that they can make the plant wilt, I jumped to the wrong conclusion. The websites do say they can attack any vegetable, just prefer brassicas which is why I worried. I will post a picture once I can find my digital camera.

I did talk to my local extension office and the guy there said that cabbage maggot flies can attack tomatoes, but it would take very high populations to do damage and that they prefer other vegetables.

I did plant corn, potatoes and lima beans. Should I worry about seedcorn maggot flies? The dirt is ridiculously dry right now. I was planning on watering those rows since we have little hope for rain anytime soon.
