wow i can not imagine a rain that would break off garlic stems, are they broken or just kinked over, when they get very ripe they do rot at the ground line, the onions often act the same when they get quite ripe, what did that heavy rain do to the rest of your plants?

We had some serious wind and the same thing happened to many of my onions, I am wondering what to do as well.

I had a garlic that I accidentally stepped on and the stem snapped. This was much earlier in the season, but I found that I still got some new growth from it. Plus, although the outside (dry) leaves cracked some of the newer growth was fine, you could try gently pulling away the outside leaves to see.

Where are you? I just harvested my garlic here in zone 6. I know my line says 5b but the stupid forum won't let me change my info.

Are your onions long-day or short-day varieties? You don't indicate your zone so I can't say which they should be. If short-day varieties then they are done now anyway and can be harvested.

I know my line says 5b but the stupid forum won't let me change my info. All you have to do is make the change in the ZONE (optional) box offered above any new post you make. The change then is auto done in any future posts.

Last year we had a heavy hail storm and my onions were shreded along with everything else in the garden. The onion were fine. The tops looked bad for the next two months until I harvested them, but the bulbs seemed healthy. I did pick the ones that looked the worst and slowly harvested them early as we used onions and I never came across any that looked dead or rotted in the ground. also a few at the end of one row got trampled pretty good because the kids walked on them picking raseberries and they even did fine. Actually except for some sun scald on the tomatoes everything in the garden recovered fairly well after the hail storm.

I live on an apple orchard in ontario. I have a huge garlic patch that was here as i just moved onto thiis property. I had 2 deer sleep in my garlic patch last night. its flatned. what can i do to save it? stems are not broken.
