A question for Dave (digdirt)

Dave, in another thread (Help! No zucchini!!) you said "The plants would very quickly be root-bound in the container with no soil left to provide either nutrients or water. That condition causes all male production only and fruit abortion if any even develop because the plants can't support any fruit and stay alive."

Can you give more details about what causes plants such as squash to produce only male blooms? This is something I'm experiencing and I've heard quite a few complaints about this recently. I've done some research but haven't found much (scholarly as opposed to opinion) on the subject. What can you tell us about this issue?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Sandy
