Zero Germination(Garden):

Mexican Sour Gherkin

Carrots - Nantes, Atomic, Yellowstone, Tonda di Parigi

Okra - Cajun Jewel, Fife Creek Cowhorn

Cowpea - Blackeye #5

Ground Cherry

* Not sure why I had problems with these items, but this season has been very wet.

Zero Germination(Bad Starting Soil?):

Cucumber - Beth Alpha

Pepper - Lemon Drop

Tomato - Sungold

Okra - Pink

Pepper - To many too list

* Lesson learned about being cheap, I need to buy better starting soil next year.

Detroyed(Rabbits):

Bean - Pawnee, Supermarconi Cuneo,Garrafal Oro, Dragon Langerie,

Aparagas bean - Red Nooodle, Unknown from Phillipines

* Try spraying beans at home with Pepper spray and see if they like that.

Rototilled Under(Oops)

Sweet Potatoes

* I really need to mark my rows better, I did get new glasses since then though.

The good thing is that this was only 10% or less of my items and I still have plenty growing just happily.

Anyone else have some failures?

thanks,

Dean

I'm pretty new at this but have learned a lot for next season.

Out of 9 tomato plants, 3 look terrible cause I planted them in old potting soil (I actually don't even know if it's potting soil) and no fertilizer for the first part of the season. They kind of recovered with fert. but they still look bad.

2 yellow squash and some Okra planted in a too shallow container and severely stunted.

Bush beans died...have no idea why. I think the container got too hot since these were the only ones in a small container.

Container Oregano died...I think it was overwatering.

3 Jalapeno plants died and the 4 left are not looking all that good. Have no idea why. I had more Jalapenos than I could ever use from one plant last year.

Did not water my zucchini on a hot day and part of the plants burned in the sun. They are not producing as well now.

But there are a lot of successes as well so that's OK. It can't all work and I learned a lot.

    6 toms to frost
    3 to rabbits.

had to plant beans twice, first time nothing came up.

Lost a flat of tom seedlings , got windy/sunny when I was hardening them off. Pretty laggy anyways so no biggy.

1 zuch to a hoe (oops)

lost a few onions , were kinda weak looking to begin with.

my garden has done excellent this year. peppers and melons are slow but everything else is great

Trionfo Violetto pole beans -- not growing all that vigorously in the first place then swallowed by their Armenian cucumber trellis-mates.

Lessons learned -- try Rattlesnake and Louisiana Purple Pod next year for more heat-adapted beans and give the Armenian cukes a really big trellis all their own.

Mysterious pepper death. May have accidentally boiled the roots turning the water on late in the morning on a sunny day without realizing how much of the hose was in the sun.

First planting of bush beans lost to potassium deficiency. Remedy for second planting -- 5-5-15 and long-term soil improvement.

One pattypan lost to borers. Rest now about down as the mildew burden got too heavy. Already planted second crop and will soon pull them and plant carrots in the empty spot.

Mysterious death of yellow pear tomato. Cause utterly undetermined. Consoled child who owned said plant and will soon plant carrots in its space.

I consider a certain amount of random loss a normal part of gardening. As I told DH the other day. I plant 10% more than I need and I start 50% more than I intend to plant. :-)

My failure was one watermelon plant. But I'm only growing 2 pepper plants and 2 squash plants. The watermelon plant would not grow at all and I think it's because there wasn't enough sun. We had June Gloom for about 3 weeks. Literally no sun. So if I do watermelon again, I'll plant it earlier in the season to avoid some of those sunless weeks.

I'm going to hold off before I call my butternut plant a failure. The male and female flowers never seem to open on the same day so lots of non-pollinated flowers. But plenty of lush vines and leaves. Hopefully it remedies itself in good time.

Failed to sprout: Acorn squash that I got from a neighbor. Seeds were too old. 7 out of 8 garlic failed to sprout - I think this is due to my inexperience with preparing the cloves; the successful one is from a dried up clove.

Doing poorly: my snow peas. I tried growing them in a hanging basket. They really didn't like it. Now I'm just keeping them going for a while until I get some flowers or something for the pot, and because the leafcutter bees like them for nest materials.

Happy surprise: my sweet potato has failed to die despite a losing all its leaves to cold weather. It started growing again last month, putting out tiny leaves out of a tiny stump, and then this week has started to take off.

One cucumber plant that I broke the stem off at ground level while I was planting the seedling. Put said stem in water and it rooted, so I stuck it back in the ground. It is maybe 2 feet tall now and I did finally get a female flower today. Sister plant put out on the same day and did not break has grown about 15 feet (to the top of the trellis, to the bottom, and back up to the top again).

Possibly one or both squash to SVB today ... will see when I get home from work.

Several bush beans didnt germinate, but enough did that I think I'll be ok.

One cantaloupe that grew to be about the size of a sickle cell shaped baseball until it finally gave up and died. Other cantaloupes on vine are doing fine. Germination issue ?

pole and bush green beans died, I forgot they are cooler weather veggies not triple digit heat lovers. Going to pull them up this weekend and plant more blackeyed peas and okra :)

Every shallot I planted this year was lost to the onion maggot.

So I pulled them up, scraped them off with a trowel, and crushed their stupid little skulls under my Crocs. Muahahahahaha!

Okra - not constructing a raised bed in heavy clay, made worse by excessive rain.

I started out getting my garden in late because I have a johnsongrass problem. I had to try to get rid of all the stolons as best as I could, put down a thick layer of horse manure and then cover all beds with black plastic to prevent johnsongrass from coming back again. I only planted two zucks because last year I was begging people to take them. Yep, you guessed, they both died before they got more then a few inches tall. I planted several crooknecks, only one survived. My tomatoes are doing well except for the romas that somehow didn't get covered by netting and the deer have been eating them down to the roots. If any of my other tomatoes grow out from under the netting, the deer nibble down as much as they can get to. The deer ate some of the squash leaves. We are in our 3rd year of drought and the deer are really hungry. They are eating things that they never touched before. Sometimes I felt guilty for covering up my plants, but then if they eat, we don't. With a family of 5, we need those tomatoes.

My heirloom tomatoes died a slow sad death from septoria leaf spot. Tore most out, left a few and got 10 tomatoes, tops. My eggplants are pathetic; spindly with yellowish leaves, maybe one purple blossom per plant (if lucky). Got knocked out by the same cool rainy weather and leaf spot as the tomatoes. Potatoes, clear across the yard, have same problem - hoping to get some potatoes, though, pulled up some babies, small but healthy looking. Trying again with new tomato plants (my first year growing tomatoes from seed, did three separate plantings because I figure I'd end up killing some.) The weather did it for me! I had the third "planting" - giving it a go.

I lost three cucumber plants to virus wilt, thanks to the cucumber beetles. I replanted nine more, of which four are growing and hearty and three sprouted but died while I was on vacation last week. Two failed to germinate.

I lost a zucchini plant two weeks ago to SVB. Amazingly the zucchini and summer squash plants right next to it have been unaffected.

My only pumpkin plant blew away in a wind storm.

My tomatoes have many green tomatoes, but have only just started turning. Most of my tomatoes have a leaf spot that is growing up the plants, so I will probably have lower production than I had expected.

Next year I am covering my cucumbers until they start flowering. I will also be buying ingredients to lure the cuke beetles to their death before they can infect the plants.
SVB will be a tough one to defeat. I killed several moths, but something got through my defenses when I wasn't looking.
As far as the tomatoes, I will space them out better and mulch more effectively.

Just my lovely green beans. A gopher found his way into the oldest of my beds and ate all the pole beans. None of the bush. He got one brussel sprout plant, must not have liked it. He went away.
Now I have to empty and re-do the wire in this bed. I didn't like it being 8x8 anyway. I have another box ready to put the wire and soil in so I can do my winter veges in there and take my time r-doing the other bed.
The only other thing was almost NONE of the older seeds (some 1 YO, some 5YO) some veges, some flowers would germinate! I had them stored in one of those aluminum cookie tins. I don't know if this would make a difference????

The boy's lavender - too much rain. He's distraught.

Venus fly trap - is on its way out. We mistakenly let it flower. The boy again is distraught.

    Watermelon - not enough sun

Zipper peas - iffy still - poor germination will lead to lower yields.

I'm about to write off the peppers. They've been in the ground since April (after frost) and still only the yellow have turned color. I'm getting irritated and they've got one more month until the cole crops go in ready or not.

Cool thread. It makes me feel better that "I tried, but it died."
