It may be different for your zone, but in NE, pak choi is a spring/fall vegetable -- it bolts in the heat REALLY quickly.

I have grown lots of the miniature versions and just sow the seeds in rows outdoors then thin at least 2-3 times. The seeds are small like poppy seeds and I prefer to thin (and eat the thinnings in salads) than carefully place each one.

Bok choy (pak choi) varieties differ in their propensity to bolt. Upon a recommendation on the Asian Vegetables forum, I grew Mei Qing Choi. True to its reputation, it held very well without bolting and I still had some in the fridge for tonight's dinner. Bolting is less of a concern as we go into cooler weather. Most kinds should do well. Baby bok choys are especially good, IMO.

BTW, I agree with Mogzilla. Direct seed bok choy. It's one of the easiest veggies to grow.

Yep direct sowing worked for me but I think it might still be too hot to start down here. I'm going to start mine September 1st or so. I suggest you plant it in intervals because it really grows fast (especially the baby ones) and it's nicer to have a little for a long time than a whole bunch all at once. I've not grown it in the fall but I think it might take close to freezing so I'm planning on using a cold frame to keep growing it all winter. Might want to think about that.

Thanks for the link, jimster. I bought several varieties online recently. It's so dang hot in Kansas right now, I think I'll wait until Sept. 1 too. Right now it's 90-100 temps with no letup in sight. Thank goodness for drip irrigation.

Cold frame sounds like a good idea, shebear. What do you use for the cover?

Well we don't get any real snow so I'm going to use some of that clear corrugated plastic stuff that was used for patio covers when I was a kid. I'm getting pretty good at using the cordless drill so I've been making all kinds of garden things.

Shebear, that's a good use for that corrugated plastic. It's thick enough to withstand hail too. I might have to try some of that if the lumber yard has any. Thanks.

You know, I need a cordless drill. I find a use for one of those things at least once a week. Think I'll get me one with a Sears coupon that's been burning a hole in my billfold.
