Why not try it and let us know what happens? Sounds like you don't have much to lose, as long as you don't damage the roots of the plants left behind when you thin the extras. When replanting, you could add a handful of fertilizer made for transplants to encourage root growth and puddle them in well.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother, I'd just snip them out. Okra puts down a tap root that would be pretty hard to get out intact without messing up the other plants.

It says here Okra has a reputation for being hard to transplant. It has a very long tap root, and when it's broken, the plant doesn't recover. But it also says But if you want to, and are willing to take a little extra care of the long tap, you can successfully transplant okra.

After a good rain, it's possible to pull a foot long burdock or other root out of the ground nearly intact, but with all of the laterals that okra has, you would probably damage some root tips. The interesting question is whether it could still recover. Or you could just reseed in the empty space, if you have enough time left in the growing season. Those in Zone 8 probably can reseed. If I reseeded there might not be enough time, which may be why I am interested in whether transplanting okra could work or not.

I had the same problem with thin spots in my rows of okra. My plants weren't quiet that big though. I moved about 100 small plants and filled in the skips. All of the plants lived. I used a small spade to get deep on both sides of the plant to get the tap root. I dug the hole in the same shape as the dirt I pulled up with the transplant.

I would only try if you can extract the transplant candidates without disrupting what's next to them. So if you have six extra plants, maybe snip off two on one side and three on the other side and, if there's plenty of room between the surviving extra and the ones you're leaving undisturbed, gingerly try to move that extra one.

Though I would probably just plant fall peas or lettuce or something in that spare two feet.
