uhm... correction "what needs to be started indoors, and what needs to be planted DIRECTLY":)

    Direct Seed:
    potato
    sweet potato
    carrot
    beet
    turnip
    radish
    corn
    okra
    pea
    green bean
I would also direct seed all the vine crops, but you may want to transplant when very young.

    All others transplant.

    Cool weather crops:
    potato
    carrot
    onion
    beet
    turnip
    radish
    peas (English)
    broccoli
    cauliflower
    spinach
    lettuce
    cabbage
    celery

Many of the cool season crops will tolerate a hard freeze if acclimated.

The remaining plants are warm season crops and will not tolerate frost.

Note: This list should not be considered absolute.

For planting dates, others in your area will probably be more help, or your cooperative extension service, and the National Weather Service should have frost dates.

Hey, same zone and I am interested in others opinions as well. My 2nd yr garden is doing pretty good. I can only speak from limited experience.
I needed to put lotsa fertilizer (old horse) in my corn rows in the fall but that section of garden was a weed field so I only put a little in after the rows were made this spring. Corn is not growing very good, needed more fertilizer. Last yrs was great. Early Sun Glow.
Last yr I started onion seeds...NO! This yr in the spring I planted sets and they are bulbing now, water alot.
I found out that zukes and cukes do better with direct sowing.
Plant too many tomatoes and peppers end of Feb and pot up. Choose the best ones for your garden. I planted mid March in cups and cell packs. Don't use peat pots. Harden them off gently for up to 2 weeks.
    Learn how to use fertilzer.
I want to start melons in cups first of May next yr.
Plant extra seeds in case they don't grow, thin them or leave a spot to move the extra seedlings after they get 2 or 3 true leaves. Protect them from the sun a couple of days.
Romaine and Black Seeded Simpson lettuce and Stupice tomatoes grow well here. Had trouble with spinach both yrs. Some of last yrs Beefsteaks turned red at the end of season and I had to pick the rest green to ripen indoors cuz of frost.
Work the soil well for carrots, remove rocks.
I planted beets and potatoes first week of May. Beets will be earlier next yr. Size of marbles now. I am glad I didn't plant the potatoes earlier cuz we had a snow storm and hail 2 days before I planted them. We had a muddy April.
I started peas, broc and cabb last week of March, seems to be about right. Lettuce mid March. Onion sets mid April.
I planted pickling cukes this yr. I just read that you need to plant lots so there will be enough to can a batch that are ripe at the same time .
Onions, cukes, and flowering potatoes need lots of water.
Onions will be pungent and cukes bitter if they don't get enough water.
For crops you want to cover in the fall when it frosts, you can plant near each other and share blankets. Like zukes and cukes or all the melons.
Remember to rotate crops yearly. Start a compost pile.
    Happy Gardening!!!

Darn! There was a great site someone had on the board the other day and I thought I saved it. I joined it! LOL
I think it was in a gardenag site?????
The subject was something in the order of sites to help with planning a garden.
It was within the last couple of days.
There are many garden planning sites out there that you put your zip into and they give you approximate dates.

This one is very easy to use for planning (you can pop in any date and mark a calendar with start dates so you're ready way ahead of time on what to sow when): Grow Guide and has tons of info on every veg on other pages: Veg Info
