Clear gel on squash?

I've harvested approximately 40 zucchini so far this season. I picked one about a month or so ago that had a clear gel like substance on the skin, the area was about an inch long and not terribly wide. When I rubbed it I could see that the skin underneath was broken. That was the only one I had like that, but I just noticed the same gel on my baby butternut squash. I rubbed it off and it's left an inch long open groove in the skin of the squash.

I'm incredibly bummed, this is the first time I've grown butternuts and I've been watching the growth of this baby every day for the last few weeks.

I Googled it but haven't been able to find any information on what it might be. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
