The way you describe it makes me think slugs. But I'm far from an expert. Might be worth looking up though and see if it fits your symptoms.

So we found for the first time white gel on two of our summer squash...never have seen it before. I cleaned it off and laid the squash on the counter to dry before storing in fridge. Sending pic of what we found when we picked it up. Not sure if the worm bore in after the gel or caused the situation with the gel. Nothing on the other one.

Pickle worms maybe. That looks a lot bigger though. But I get small worms leaving clear gel (poop) after entering cucumber or squash fruit. They have not shown up yet this year but I think they are about ready to attack. They leave a small pin hole entry point into the squash or cucumber.
