Watermelon issues

Ever since I started growing watermelons I've had problems with them rotting. They grow just fine for the first few weeks after the fruit has set, then start to get mushy at the blossom end. I've fertilized them this year with compost tea but the rot is still happening. Is this some sort of deficiency in the soil? Too much rain maybe? I'm growing Moon & Stars (red and yellow), Orangeglo, and Chelsea.

And one more thing. This isn't an issue, just a curiosity induced question. If I hand pollinated a watermelon blossom with pollen from two different watermelons, what will the resulting F1 fruit be like? For instance, if I pollinated a female M&S (red) blossom with male Orangeglo and Chelsea blossoms, would the resulting fruit have genes from all three varieties?

Thanks!

Abby
