missing Eggplant blossoms

I've got a beautiful eggplant in my garden for the first time. It is about 3 ft tall and has big healthy leaves and ONE actual eggplant about the size of a softball. I check it daily and have found many healthy blossoms, even a second fruit the size of a marble. The next day they are totally gone, without a trace. I can't even locate where they were! I start to think I imagined them, except others have seen them as well. I've got marigolds planted around the garden and nothing has bothered the blossoms or fruits of the tomato or pepper plants. My eggplant blossoms just seem to disappear! I thought it might be rabbits but they would have to be very, very tall bunnies. I have not seen any groundhogs or gophers, not even squirrels since the dogs chance them away. My brother says the birds eat them. This is so very frustrating. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions??
