Agree. It all depends on whether or not your greenhouse is heated. Seedlings aren't nearly as tolerant of cold temps as established plants are.

Asparagus from seed is a bit of a waste. You only want male plants and as far as I know you can't tell male from female in the seedling stage.

I agree. Aside from being able to say, "I grew it from seed," you'd be happier with an all male variety--better production, no unwanted seedlings.

I have a question related to this:

If I grow asparagus in a Greenhouse that is heated to the proper temperatures 50ish - 80ish...

Can I have continual harvests of asparagus through the year??? Or, like many fruit trees; do asparagus have to go into dormancy in order to produce???

You can't harvest from the same plants throughout the year. You are not picking fruit, you are cutting off the plant's stems as they rise from the ground in spring. Keep that up and the plant will die. If you were able to control the climate in your greenhouses totally, including temperature and light, you could probably grow asparagus year round providing you harvested from different plants. You'd need more than one greenhouse so some plants could have their winter resting period or their summer growing period while others were having their spring harvest period.

More to the point, when it gets cold (less than 50F), asparagus does go dormant. But if it never gets cold, it won't ever go dormant, and doesn't have to in order to produce. That being said, dormancy ensures larger, thicker stems when production resumes. But note that if you continuously pick the spears before they make foliage, the root system will suffer. So harvest should happen for just a couple of weeks, whether you let them go dormant or not.

QUICK QUESTION!! My asparagus is in my greenhouse (unheated), how do i prepare them for winter and do i need to water them since they won't get snowed on?
