Overwintering Onions?

Ok, need some help from some onion experts....Onions come in short, intermediate and long-day varieties. The guidance is to get the right variety for your geography. I assume this applies when planting onions in the spring. Does this same advice apply if you decide to overwinter them (plant in the fall versus in the spring)? If not, what adjustments should be made?
