Fantastic house! But, you already know, the landscaping is ....pretty bad! I would right this second rip out all the shrubs. I would just leave the tree on the left. And, when you get the landscaping done, I would definitely address the drive way. That house deserves better!

Why don't you want the portico over your front door to also cover the windows? Are you worried about it getting too dark inside the house? If so, perhaps there is a way to build the pergola out of something translucent or include a skylight.

I see something very linear as a pergola.

What ever you do pergola wise, I think it would look nice to do a smaller, similar one over the small window on the left wall.

I think you should plant a tree with great branch structure on the right side of the front, backed by the windowless wall. It would appear almost as a sculpture. Definitely up light those trees at night and cast shadows on your walls.

Thanks for your suggestions. We're not worried about covering the windows per se, but don't know what it would look like from the inside if it's not designed properly. We had one design done that cut right through the middle section of windows and just didn't look right. Where would we put the roofline of the pergola?? The driveway is blacktop and is very large. You really can't see but there's circle drive in front and we were thinking about some tile or stone for the front sidewalk. Also, what do you think of the color I mentioned, (Sandstone for the main color and Mississippi Mud for the trim by Behr)? thanks for taking the time to give your ideas.

First off: I am not a designer, just love design! So just take from my ideas what you will!

I can see a pergola that hits the windows above your door at about a third of the way up, basically it will mimic the grid pattern at the top of the window.

A glass portico treatment similar to one of these could be installed on the cross section just above the front door. The translucence would be a modern touch and the placement wouldn't interfere with the windows.





I think a door similar in style to this would look great on your house - strong and modern.
