Sounds like Fig Mosaic Virus. In some varieties FMV is almost a given, especially since all propagation in common figs is from cuttings.

Some say that all commercially available figs have FMV and that the degree to which they show symptoms varies with cultivar. Lots of info and many discussions about this can be found by searching the Fig Forum.

Yes, virus. Don't grow out of it.

Instead, sometimes mottling is obvious, sometimes not. Never affected production on the fig tree I had when I lived in CA.

Thank you for your responses. I am very informed about rose mosaic virus and should have known the tree wouldn't grow out of it. It is such a shame. The tree came from the nursery with perfect leaves. I wonder if they cut off the mosaic leaves. It is a great producer, but isn't very beautiful because of the leaves. I consider most fig trees to be extremely beautiful. Boo Hoo. Thank you for your help.

As was said, the visible symptoms come & go.

So, the nursery didn't remove the symptomatic leaves. Instead, the symptoms weren't visible at that time.

Tried to upload a photo, to see if what I'm dealing with is mosaic, as it seems. Is there any way to do that here? I'm in Portland, too, which is why I'd hoped Jean might be able to take a look at it.
