It must work for the people who originally put this kitchen in. It's quite a spacious kitchen and the island is huge, so it can accommodate it. I agree, however, that most people would not need or want this arrangement.

We're actually thinking of doing this for exactly the opposite reason. We have a tiny kitchen with a peninsula dividing the kitchen from the breakfast area. Our sink is on the peninsula. We want to keep the breakfast area (otherwise we could make it one large kitchen), but I'm thinking of putting another sink opposite of the existing sink so that anyone who is "helping" is out of my tiny kitchen triangle and helping from the breakfast nook area.

Well if it works for you and that's what you want, then go for it! Don't worry about what other people say :)

I designed a kitchen with a custom stone double sided apron sink across an island. The idea is similar to two front to back sinks but in our case we have one extra large sink and a large pullout faucet located at the center of the island to one side of the sink. The homeowners love it and it allows for draining a pot on the side by the range or working at a large peninsula counter on the other side of the island and still having access to sink and faucet.

The kitchen has 3 benches (in the above photo there is another bench on the right), so the island sinks can service either bench depending on which side you are standing, exactly as Cherylhow describes in the comment above

Did you get feedback from your clients - did they like the dual sinks and/or did they find the "look" distracting? I always thought of two sinks, two facuets... but such creative placement of the one facuet! Would you recommend this again?

Hi cherylhow, the clients are kitchen designers and manufacturers. They design and make high-end kitchens in noosa, and they love this kitchen layout. They have a deep single sink on one side and a standard double sink on the other, with the centrally placed tap (faucet)

Go for it!! I know of someone who did the back-to-back sinks when they renovated a couple of years ago, and they love it! It might just be more common than you think.
