Buy the new engine. No telling what damage the rod did when it broke.

If you have free time, I'd look inside. You might only have to clean up the crank journal.

thanks for your advice , I am leaning towards getting a new con rod , This engine is apart and looks ok , The con rod was in 10 pieces. Need to lightly sand the journal .The piston had a little chip out of the side flange.

I wouldn't sand the journal. Use Muriatic acid to dissolve the aluminum off the journal. Then use 600 or finer emery cloth and oil to finish the job.

I'd put a new engine on it and sell off the good parts on the old one or keep them for spares. I think chances are high that it will start knocking or have some other problems after being repaired.

Thank you all . I am going to buy a good used engine ($100)at local repair shop and list my broken one on Craigslist for $20

I would have just replaced conrod if it was just a one or 2 piece failure ,but it was dozens of pieces . So it failed at high speed . Geez some people get a new mower and forget to fill with oil. Apparently happens more frequently than I thought
Will up date when project completed

'Geez some people get a new mower and forget to fill with oil'

This is why a mower shop will always service an engine before delivery - stops a lot of problems before they happen. The other thing is, unfortunately a lot of people are actually too ignorant about machinery to even be in charge of a lawn mower. Or a car, for that matter.

Guys,

We spend all of our time babying old stuff to keep it going. Doesn't it seem like such a waste to ruin a brand new motor?

I always wondered why there isn't a red tag on both the recoil handle and on the oil fill screaming.."Hey! There is no oil in me, serious damage will ensue if you don't add it now"
