I will guess...Aquatic Mint, Water Mint, Watermint (Mentha aquatica)

Regardless, all of my mints are in containers..none in water..and most mints I have found to be invasive...

If you are wanting to put it in the ground, place it in a container....

The stems are often purple. Bears tiny, densely crowded, purple, tubular flowers borne in whorls. The whole plant is heavily mint (sometimes almost sickly sweet) scented.

Likes boggy places or shallow ponds in poor soil with full sun to partial shade.

I read it was good for herbal baths and herbal pillows--but considered too pungent for cooking

Thanks so much for your input! :) I really would like to give it the best possible care I can and of course make sure kitty wont get sick drinking the water,which I doubt, since she seems to prefer the water it grows in opposed to her drinking water...lol...fatamorgana I will pop on over ,thanks for the invite! :)

I have a water mint also, it's great in a ditch that is only wet in winter. It may not be the same as yours since I'm on the west coast but it is the clearest menthol of any of my mints except the Corsican mint. It is also very invasive planted in dry soil.
