Dresser wouldn't fit on the wall where the little kitchen is? If not, the dresser and bed can't switch places? Be nice to raise bed and make it more prominent.

Also, if you can raise up the bed a few inches you could roll some toy boxes, or store out of season clothes there.

Ahh, fun days. Remember mine had a kitten themed room, then an island theme (never forget stamping palm trees along the tops of the walls), then she moved into a very modern black and white.

I agree, the bed is too short. The new euro pillow against the headboard helps a little bit. We tried to make it more prominent with the pink headboard... I might check craigslist to see if I can find anything cheap to switch it with. Great idea about the storage underneath! Our house is tiny!

Craigslist is great (I just got the cutest day bed for my gazebo there!!). Also try consignment stores. But even raising the bed up 6 inches and having a longer dusk ruffle would help to balance it. Just make sure it is done safely!

World Market has very sweet hanging "mosquito nets" for around $35 (just bought one for the gazebo!). If it was hung right over the head of the bed, you could drape it around your cute pink headboard. That would look darling!

Just noticed: are you missing a box spring? That would certainly help in raising up the bed also.

PS: Would the dresser fit in the middle of her closet? That is where mine is!

Look at Restoration hardware kids for ideas. I think tone on tone whites and creams would be so pretty with the revere pewter. I'd get rid of the pink headboard and add a sparkly side lamp

Since the bed and the chest of drawers fit best in the wall you have them, try switching them; in other words, put the chest of drawers closer to the window, and the bed to the left of the chest of drawers. This will open up the space and not make the bed so crunched up against the wall. I will also get rid of the footboard all together, and just accent the headboard. Try putting the armoire at an angle, just to break it up a bit. I would add area rugs to anchor the room down. I know you feel the bed will take over the room, but the way it is displayed now, it doesn’t have a great flow of space. Hope this is helpful.

Play with colors she loves and layer in prints. As she grows you can change out the pillows. Check out pottery barn teen- they have a great selection.

a really bright, vivid area rug incorporating the pink, grey, raspberry and white would give the room some pop!

You painted too soon ... go find the bedding you and she want (it has the most limited selection), then pick the accessories, then the paint color to enhance the bedding.

By 4, she has some definite color likes and dislikes. Pink can be sophisticated to barf-inducing "girly". Pink and several shades of grey, pink and chocolate, pink and navy .... with turquoise or bright green accents

The formula is "some medium pink with dark neutral and a bright green or blue-green in small quantities"

The large storage furniture is overwhelming the room! I would go to any lengths to get rid of one of those pieces. What's in the armoire? If clothes are in the armoire, the dresser, and half of your closet, she has too many clothes! If toys are in the armoire, there are so many less invasive solutions that are attractive and take up less space. Then you can put the dresser where the armoire is. Or raise the bed and get a low dresser to put next to it. I don't see this room being "solved" without moving that dresser.

Also, can you turn the bed so that the window is to its right (as you are facing it). That way the curtains will not hit the bed.

I agree with tsudhonimh: You painted too soon. The pewter grey is too dark for a small room with one window, especially since it's a 4 year-old girl's room.

A piece of storage furniture (or the large toy kitchen) CAN be placed in a closet, and looks like you've got a big closet, so it's definitely worth considering. Or, it looks like you could tuck that kitchen in beside the armoire under the tv, and put the hi-boy where the kitchen is now. You may have to move that light switch (some electricians are brainless) but that's easy to do. That would also give you opportunities to adjust the location of the bed a bit, to make it more a focal point and easier to make.

Gray is a bit drab for a little girl's room, but you can probably find some great pink & gray prints that will turn it into a fun room. You could go retro to the 50's pink poodle images, for example, or 70's geometrics, or 60's Peter Maxx florals.Yellow is great combined with gray, too, for something a bit more unexpected, and really cheers up gray - sunny vs cloudy.

How about adding different hardware to chest and armoire, like crystal knobs? Also, add a small venetian mirror above chest or on another wall? This will tie in the beautiful chandelier!

One way to jazz up the gray paint would be to add those large peel and stick vinyl decals. Maybe there are some you can find if you do a goggle search.

Hi, I've done my daughters room just recently shabby chic. The paint color is Chalk Pink and we choose a pearl white for the chair rail we added around the room. The bedding I selected was from Target, it's the Shabby Chic collection they have with a white ruffled cotton comforter and pink ruffled sheets. I have a few accents of black such as picture frames and her initial in black over her bed. I would recommend a night stand table next to her bed with maybe an acrylic lamp to compliment the crystal chandelier. Since she is young maybe a small table and 2 chairs for art. I also like a small rug kinda with that shabby look. I would put up a white sheer drape too so it will soften the look of the blind.

Look to the current quilt fabric designers...At Quilthome.com. There are fabulous, contemporary colors and styles that can easily be made into duvet covers, pillowcases, curtains..the sky is the limit!

check Pottery Barn Kids for bedding and then put a coordinate fabric roman blind on the window. Don't forget, lots of cushions, a rug and wall art...and TADA !

Here's an "outside the box idea". It appears that your daughter's room is fairly small. (I saw her cute kitchen, but little room for a desk/play surface). A kid-sized Murphy bed with a pull down desk (for those great artistic moments and games) might really be an answer to space. It could look similar to her other furniture as well. Pottery Barn kids does a nice job on kids sheets. But you can do a one stop shop at TheLandofNod.com Excuse my next statement though (my mom's a psychologist and she preaches this over and over) Why does your 4 year old have a t.v. in her room? and why is it so omni-present? I think you would do best to place the t.v. in the hutch and then you could use up that valuable real estate to do other stuff.

Some possibilities are to put the bed center on the wall where the hutch and tv are. Good chi states you should always be able to see who comes in your door to prevent bad chi from sneaking up on you.

I am not a fan of dressers and such in such a modern age where closets are nicely sized. Drop a dime and put in a really good closet system that will hold all of her clothing in the closet with drawers to hold whatever is in the hutch and the bureau. Then either repurpose the dresser and hutch or call Goodwill. Lowes, Home D or California Closet if you can drop the $$ to have someone do it all for you.

Consider a small table and chair from one of those unpainted wood furniture stores and paint it yourself. This gives her a place to do art, or tea parties or hang with kids at a playdate and if you spend time with her in her room you have a place Then put in a shallow window seat that runs all across the window wall that has a lovely cushion on top and you can use the bottom for either storage or make a pretty bookcase for her books and toys to hang out.

Get some kids art. There is NOTHING like you and her laying out some craft paper and letting her finger paint or whatever she likes and then go to Michaels and get those $5 dollar frames and frame her work. If she's not in to it then go to a consignment store or used book store and buy old Dr. Seuss books. Carefully rip the pages out and frame them. They add a pop of color and most kids love the seussical books. (see photo)

She also needs a princess rug.

You can also find some inexpensive stencils for a girls room at Target. In fact target has this great metal art that is butterflies and if you hang them in a group they are really stunning. But again The Land of Nod has been a wonderful go to for me when I needed it.

Looks like you've got a good start. I'm wondering if you have considered turning the bed around and the head going on the wall beside the window. Then the chest on the adjacent wall or the door wall and the kitchen on the other side of the window. Now, those curtains won't be hidden by the foot of the bed. A pink toile would be cute with her headboard, however, I would consider going with her favorite color. There are great ensembles today in great colors that will go with the pink. Target has some adorable girlie sets. Good luck, hope this helped a little.

This Can be done w a high gloss paint, even in a lighter shade of the gray would work and then add pink blossoms on branches (try the bottom of a 2 lt. Drink bottle dipped in the pink). If you haven't painted the ceiling, you might consider painting it a light pink or at least a little pink around the light , perhaps in a scroll or diamond (stencils are available for this kind of thing). How about her initial in a pink pillow with gray piping for her bed?
I know it is challenging to get everything in that you want to in such a small space but keep at it you'll get there! Don't forget to post the finished project!

Hi! I think you should put the bed in the corner at an angle. That would give you a nice focal point and perhaps you can add fabric from the ceiling as a canopy.

benny moore's revere pewter is the BEST COLOR EVER.....I have it in every room of my house and you would NEVER know it! Serena and Lilly have FAB bedding, and Pinecone Hill, too. Find some great knobs at Anthropologie, get a grip: an armoire AND a closet?????? And a TV????? And get that bed away from the wall...an up< up, up....kids LIKE small, cozy spaces, no need for open floor space here, I am certain there are plenty of other places in your house for that, like under the kitchen/dining table?And dump the play kitchen, let her create her own world, not some mocked up adult world in kid size....

I agree that the bed needs to be more prominent. Also, rather than simply repeating pink, I would go with a deep raspberry fabric, maybe in an ikat or trellis pattern and repeat it. New knobs on the dresser and armoire. Have you thought about taking a jigsaw to the armoire doors and cutting a lovely Moroccan shape and then lining it with fabric for texture and drama? I would also switch the dresser and bed positions to make the bed front and center. I also agree with removing the footboard, You'll gain more space. Double curtain rods with a sheer pretty lining (Swiss dot, perhaps or Cost Plus World Market has adorable floral sheers) and a raspberry curtain with lovely tasseled belts. Also, baskets for books under the television or a practical and space-saving wall-mounted plate/book rack underneath. Good luck!

I am thinking that you want to keep all the furniture that you have and keep it where you have it since you stated they positioned the only place that worked. Once you get the bedding on, etc. If you want to do something more, you could do something to the cupboard or chest of drawers. Put yellow pulls on the chest that match the bedding; you could stencil on the cupboard doors, put a design on it (stores have the peel and stick) like the black tree with bird or if you want to keep it simple just accessorize. I am not into buying a bunch of new furniture when I don't want to spend extra money. You know what works for your needs, the room size and what toys she will play with most often. The bedding will make a big difference. Dressing the window as well and for a statement that is simple, consider the knobs (yes, Anthropology has quite a few too or look online if necessary) or a graphic. A nice coordinating framed print or maybe framed artwork she has made herself should make you and your daughter happy. Just remember at the tween years they all want to redo it anyway. I have three girls and all three wanted their own look when they got older so don't spend a fortune now!

Oh and if you bought the white and yellow bedding recover the headboard too! Staple gun and fabric equals new bed!

I'm sure the Pewter is an awesome color but I think you hit the nail on the head with "and you would never know it.". This is a 4 year olds room and out of my four granddaughters and 3 daughters I don't have a single one that would have wanted a color that wasn't there...iykwim. Since this room is so small I think I might even add some stripes all around the entire room in her favorite color. I think you could put any color w the pewter. I've read so many great ideas re this room. I wished I'd had Houzz when my girls were little...I would have saved a lot of money on paint! Again...GOOD LUCK! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU DO:)

Another use for the armoire: if the "guts" could go and the frame could stay, I would put it in the corner at an angle and create a puppet theater.

It should all be about encouraging imagination: small upholstered chair for her to curl up and read in, table for art and tea parties...

Wow. I appreciate all of the decorating advice! I'm a little taken aback by some of the rather blunt, unsolicited suggestions regarding what we've done so far/the way we raise our little girl. But, I guess that comes with the territory. This is my first post here... didn't really know what to expect.

I promise on all that is holy... the furniture simply cannot be rearranged. We can't afford to buy new furniture so I'm just going to have to work with what we have in the space that we have. I'll try the kitchen under the tv but even then, the dresser won't fit by the door... we've already tried that. Her closet is full of clothes, toys, books and dress up clothes. If that means she has too much stuff then so be it. It is what it is. I, personally, don't think she has anymore than an average 4 year old... it's just a small room.

I bought a mosquito net canopy to hang over the headboard. I'm hoping that it will make the bed appear even taller in order to reduce the height difference between it and the dresser. I was thinking of maybe adding some white Christmas lights around the hoop at the top? The new bedding looks better already... I'm just looking for a patterned duvet or comforter to fold at the end of the bed and maybe a pillow of the same pattern to mix in with the others.

I also brought in some frames and an iron scroll thing we already had. I'll hang those once the bedding is complete...

I'm still not sure about the window treatment. I'm not opposed to losing the blinds altogether. We've done that in several rooms and switched to bamboo. I just worry I won't be able to keep it dark enough in the early mornings. And I definitely want to get a rug!

Our entire house is small. So, in order for the kids to have a place of their own to watch movies (Daddy hogs the living room tv and I'm in graduate school and study in my bedroom quite a bit) there must be a tv in one of the kids' rooms. I thought it was fairly hidden behind the armor when you first walk in the room. The only way you see it is if you come all of the way in. I hate seeing cords and such from the side. She doesn't have cable... just loves to watch Disney movies. I have absolutely no problem with it and can assure you she is a happy, healthy, intelligent 4 year old who doesn't watch tv all day long...

As far as the paint color goes, it is certainly not drab. I feel like it is a clean, stately color and is neutral enough to accommodate almost any bedding/accessories. We had enough leftover from painting our master bedroom to use for hers. It is not a dark color at all. Again, she is perfectly fine with it and was super excited when we finished it. I'm certainly not opposed to stripes like someone mentioned. I think gray/white would be so cute.

I hadn't considered new knobs... I'll definitely check Anthropologie. Looking back at the photos, they do kinda stick out. It's just something I hadn't paid much attention to in person.

Hi jburgess412...well said! Okay, I saw this yesterday but was side tracked and never responded. Having raised two children and living in military housing with small rooms, I completely understand where you are coming from.

I like the wall color. With artwork, window treatments, bedding, etc. it will all blend. I believe you have found the bedding? Also, I think I saw that you had taken the footboard completely off the bed? Is it possible to make a matching footboard, same height and color as the headboard? The reason I ask...could you possibly center her bed under the window, like a daybed or bench? If so would there be room to swap the armoire and dresser, but place them on the window wall at either end of the bed facing into the room? That way her television could stay wall mounted and maybe a picture over the dresser on that end ( I noticed her Ariel picture which could work) to balance the height of the armoiur on the other end.

Another option, which I do not think I saw and I am sure design wise would be completely unacceptable, but why not "hide" the dresser under the televison beside the armoire? Then her bed could be turned so the headboard is to the left of the window. I think the closet would then be to the foot of her bed? With the television above the dresser the two pieces of furniture would be equal in height. That could possibly open up the area under the window for a small bench with storage, or slide the kitchen under the window. Then the lamp that is on top of the kitchen would be beside her bed as a bedtime/night light. For televison viewing she would need to prop against the wall, but if she has a bed full of pretty fluffy pillows, she probably won't mind.

How about some book/Knick-knack shelves? It is the one thing I could do with more of in my daughter's room. She will collect lots of pretty little things to display over the years. (you could put a shelf (use no more nails glue if you are not good with a drill) on the side of the dresser by the head of the bed to be a 'bedside table' for book, glass of water- very useful but doesnt have to be large or put two and put lamp on upper one) Another idea for accent colour, that will go with the pink too, is a mauve/lilac purple. You could find some butterflies or hearts or big flower stickers for the wall. We have a high (stick on) border with pink, mauve, and a shiny silvery reflective colour in it. Then white curtains that have a middle panel of clear/sparkly sequins which would go with any colour, but go nicely with the border. Similar to my shelf idea, is it possible to put a fold up shelf on the side of the dresser by the tv (or elsewhere) to be a table or desk so she can use it but it doesn't take up space permanently?
So much fun decorating :-) I am sure your daughter is going to love this when you have finished. Well done you for pulling it all together with so much love!

I am so type A... clean, straight lines are my thing and I almost never put things at an angle. It usually drives me crazy. BUT, I tried scooting the dresser towards the closet and turning the bed on an angle to open up the window.

I think it looks ok.

I'm going to leave it for a few days to see if it starts to drive me bonkers before I put anything on the walls. I think the window definitely looks better...

I think it has been challenging because when asking for advice about one topic, I have observed advice on everything else other than the question originally posted. It would be nice if we just stuck to the topic! I made the comment about the knobs not because I thought yours looked bad. I just thought it might tie it all together if you wanted to move the eye around the room. And if you did change them I would keep those to put back on one day if needed. Honestly if you just did the bedding, some pictures, etc. I think you would be happy.

They have cute curtains and ideas at PotteryBarnKids.com // I bought my kids beds and bedding from there and just called it a day. Added large hand painted canvas pictures on the wall and applied paintable wallpaper. I was also crunched for space but it worked out well. Good luck, she is a lucky girl to have such a mommy!

I think bamamom has a good idea, worth a try.

Do a furniture "hack" and turn the dresser and armoire into one piece of furniture. Put the dresser right next to the armoire. Place them so that the front of the dresser and the front of the armoire are flush. That will leave space behind the dresser, but you can figure out a way to camouflage it.

The goal is to make it look like one piece of storage furniture and I think this is definitely doable without a lot of effort and little or no expense.

This would solve every layout problem you have. Forgive me in advance, I am assuming that you have not tried this and that there is room for the dresser to the left of the armoire.

Then you can turn the bed, or not, and put a little bedside table or low bookcase that serves the same function and also gives her a place to show off her treasures and books, like someone said above.

So, I'm still not quite done. I need a window treatment, some better accessories on the dresser, new knobs on the furniture, and new doorknobs. HOWEVER, it's come a long way since I last posted. Enjoy!
