Many orchids are epiphytes (in the wild they would live on trees and get their moisture and some nutrients from the air). It looks like your plant is sending out aerial roots and it's normal for these kinds of plants to produce them. I'm still new to the orchid world though, so you might want to confirm with the others on here as well!

The roots are fine. Might need to be repotted with new mixture and perhaps a slightly bigger pot but winter is approaching and maybe you should leave that task till next spring.
In the interim, find some complete culture notes written for places with climates similar to MA and do some research.

Those roots look normal and healthy. Whitish with a green tip. Entire root should turn green when watered.
Repot into plastic with a mix containing wood chips, coconut husk and just a little Sphagnum moss.

Don't repot it while it is still blooming! Wait until the blooms fall off and you've cut the flower spike.
