Most single do this. Mutabilis definitely does.

Most singles do it, as M.G. says.
What's really interesting is very double blooms that do it.

There's something rather endearing, I think, about a big, huge, many-petalled 'Golden Celebration' trying to stuff all of her petticoats back in, and close up for the night.
It doesn't really WORK, but she tries real hard. :-)

I too have noticed it in singles, and it's rather thrilling, don't you think? I don't recall whether I noticed it in the evening or in dark, cloudy weather, but I definitely recall the phenomenon.

I recall seeing it too. It is wonderful. Two roses that I think I recall doing it are Complicata and Cymbaline.

I don't think so; at least they're not the only ones. Robert's two aren't Spinosissimas, and I remember that 'White Wings' used to do it.

Now that you mention it, yes, I have noticed that. I only have one single-petal rose, but it does close its blooms at night.
My rose is 'Basye's Blueberry'. It has a heavy dose of rosa virginiana alba & rosa carolina in its recent heritage.

When I exhibited 'Aint Misbehavin' by McCann, a pretty single miniature, you would see lines of single roses posed in such a way as to catch the earliest sun's rays
in order to open up the flower before putting it in the rose show, at least partially because the rose show rooms were chilly and it needed to open before you put it in the show or it wouldn't open until after the judges rated it.

I think this was true of several singles that I have exhibited including 'Ellen Willmott' and some of the poly singles like 'Mary Guthrie' and 'Little Butterfly.'

I recently purchased Best Friend rose bush and came outside at night and not that the bloom and semi closed l was astonished as l wasn’t aware of roses doing this

Yes! Cameo Perfume does that the first couple nights after full bloom.
