I bought a beautiful, healthy White Snowflake Plant (Nymphoides Cristata) about two weeks ago and placed it in the pond. It was full of healthy leaves. Immediately, about 16 Comet's appeared to swim around it and 'check it out'. Now, they have managed to EAT it down to a few pitiful stems. They have also chewed waterlily stems. We have a very large (175 foot, spring- and creek-fed pond that is 4 ft. deep at the longest end and about 85 to 100 Comets and a few Bluegill Breams that we did not put in there). I am wondering if, because of the extended, cooler-than-normal Spring, there is no algea growth and they are hungry?! I have begun feeding them what I have, wild fish pellet feed and they are eating that. I intend to also go buy them some specialty goldfish food. I know koi will eat plants. But I thought they would be safe from the goldfish but not the White Snowflake!! Also, does anyone knwo if goldfish and bluegill's interbreed??
