Where did you purchase your diningroom table. I really like it

Absolutely go for the bigger rug. Your chairs should be on the rug even when seated. As it is now, whoever gets the end seats would have their chair hang off the end.
Because the other size is available, to me, it is a no brainer, go big, it looks too squishy right now. You have plenty of room with the room dimensions, no need to turn the rug in the other direction, you'll still be left with 12" of exposed floor at the ends of the rug, which is great.

I agree with Wow that the rug as it sits right now is too small. I also had the same thought as Feeny that repositioning the the furniture might work. I do think, though, that if you repositioned the furniture, that the width would work, but it would still not be long enough. Do you have a leaf for the table...another thing to keep in mind.

HI -- I think you will regret not getting the larger carpet.

Got to agree - go for the bigger rug if you can. We have one that is just too short and it bugs me every time we use the table. I think your furniture looks a bit squished on the smaller rug. Assume you are able to exchange? In time you will forget the extra expense but you won't forget the annoyance of a rug that's too small.

I VOTED FOR THE BIGGER RUG (YOU NEED TO ADD AT LEAST 3 ' TO THE SIZE OF THE TABLE SO THE CHAIRS CAN BE PULLED BACK AND STAY ON THE RUG). I ALSO LIKE FEENY'S SUGGESTION TO ROTATE THE TABLE.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT NO RUG AT ALL?

What does one do for rug size if table is an extension table and only gets opened up fully on occasion?

Most of us are in that boat, only opening the table fully a couple of times a year.

I would suggest a rug that suits the table size for MOST of the year, and not worry about "rug rules" for special occasions...if the rug is really too short when you have a large gathering, you can also roll it up and tuck it out of sight for the party, or live with the fact that the end chairs are off the rug.

Same goes with chandeliers...they are centered 99% of the time, and then for the 2-3 times you might have a big group, sometimes the table has to be placed off center of the light fixture.
Bottom line, entertaining rules win!

Then again, if you have large gatherings regularly, say 15-20 times a year or more, then you may want to plan the space around the fully extended table, since that is when the room will be used most often anyways....which would mean larger rug, perhaps two chandeliers, etc.

I vote for the larger rug, but also like the idea of no rugs with beautiful flooring... Depends on the style of the home and needs of the client.

The bigger is more rectangular than the current rug and will fit the size and shape of the table better. I agree with feeny about trying the table the other way, the room looks longer than it is wide, that was the first thing I noticed.

For some reason, I am tempted to put the rug on a 45 degree angle and see how that works.....

Hi mitchellstein11, we like the larger size. The current rug is a little tight given the length of your table and chairs but it's a nice-looking rug!

I like the size of the rug. Any larger would look too big. However, I would suggest turning the table an 1/8th turn so that it lines up with two points of the rug. Makes much more sense that way.

I think if you went larger, you would cover up too much of the floor. Can you rotate the table? Would that make it fit better on the rug? It's hard to tell from the photo. Good luck.
