Has the varnish darkened? You may be able to refresh it, but I'm not sure what that would entail. Maybe sanding and refinishing?

The darkening will go away by proper cleaning and then sanding with a machine and the worn area can be filled with a filler then apply Clear Lacquer and Voilà ! Good Luck

Emily and Vikrant both are on point about sanding and refinishing. As for cleaning I know my grandmother would use light soap and water but I would suggest any wood furniture cleaner. I had similar painted cabinets that when cleaned really looked a lot better. Dont trust a cook with clean fingers :-)

I cleaned them a month or so ago with Liquid Gold and I was very disappointed. It didn't seem to take dirt off and just left an oily surface. I think I might try grandma's way.

I just scrubbed all of my old stained wood trim with clorox and water and it did wonders. I've been debating about pickling it so I wanted to get it super clean. It lightened it up a notch but at least it's ready for a gray or white wash now.

Try Totally Awesome Degreaser from the Dollar Store with hot water. Might take a couple passes to do the job. Finish up with Liquid Gold.

Since its been 14 years why not change the shade to a few tones darker if the totally awesome degreaser doesn't work ! Good Luck .

Natural Maple is hard to stain because of the tight grain. It sometimes turns out splotchy. I had a painter that used dye.

I'm reluctant to go darker; although dark stain is all the rage now, I think that is likely to change soon.
