Need help for first greenhouse

Hi everyone,

I am planning on getting a new greenhouse to grow orchids that have been living indoors for many years. The problem is that I don't have a ton of room left in my backyard, due to a garden, for a big greenhouse. I am thinkin that the biggest greenhouse I could get is a 6 x 8 ft. I see one on Canadiantire.com that says its a deluxe greenhouse with transparent polycarbonate walls. I don't know a great deal about what is best and worst for greenhouses. Can anyone tell me if this would be a great choice or not for my winter climate which does get very cold sometimes...down to -28 degrees celcius with windchills. And there can be a lot of snow. Thank you for your help.

    dasheen-
That's a cute little greenhouse...but probably not the best for your climate. I took a look at it and it has only single wall polycarbonate walls. In your Zone, you need double or triple wall polycarb or you will probably end up spending hundreds of dollars a month on heating. With double or triple wall you will still have to provide some supplemental heat, but not nearly as much. I don't know much about growing orchids, but I assume they might have a problem with your greenhouse if you let it get too cool in winter.

I suggest you get a copy of the book, Greenhouse Gardener's Companion, by Shane Smith, which will help you understand the different choices available in greenhouse materials, and what choices you have for heating in winter. He also has a section on growing orchids in greenhouses.

Thanks for the great feedback kuduzu9. I'll look into this book for sure. I think it's sad that my neighbourhood Canadian Tire would sell a greenhouse that isn't good for my climate though. Thanks again.

I'm currently puttin up a 6x8 HFGH(Cleve,OH)and you will find alot of pro's n cons on harbor freight. If you go with HF, you will have to add extra support for wind an dead/snow load. To heat it year round-I think it will be expensive(probably no more than a good pack of canadian ciggs per day-just joking -but i do like ur ciggs-just cant afford em). You can add inside insulation to the panels(alot use bubble wrap an tape or water to hold it in place) I did put up a heat calculator on another post. If you can't locate it, email me an i'll give you the URL.

Michel, I have been thinking about getting a greenhouse from BC Greenhouses too, but first I do think their prices are very high and I can't even imaging the shipping costs. Plus, I am not very handy at building structures, so I am worried about being able to properly put up the greenhouse once it does arrive...especially building a proper base for it. Ideally, I would want a concrete floor just because I like the fact that it's easy to clean and bugs can't get in.

Bob, I have looked at some of HF stuff, but again I don't want a greenhouse that would require extras on my part cause I ain't handy! And that's the truth.

I am still hoping someone in the Toronto area in Ontario would give me an idea of where I could get a really good greenhouse and have someone install it for me. That would be ideal for me.

Thank you all for your responses. You have been very helpful.
