Nautical Theme Room?

last modified: 14 years ago
Hello, I was thinking of making my room nautical themed. Now, it's a new room that has been built recently and it's still under some construction but my contractor wants me to choose a paint for them to use.

There are two parts of my room: The 'bed' room (which is more narrow) and the room where I have my desks, tv, closet, etc. The two rooms are separated with an arch.

For my 'bed' room I thought of having the color "Restless Sea" ( http://tinyurl.com/ckvmz37) painted 2/3rds of the wall with "Edgy Red" ( http://tinyurl.com/cqso2ba) separate the blue and the white paint with a thin line. I'm not really sure whether or not to paint the ceiling white or some other color.

Now for the other room, I didn't know whether or not to stray from the nautical theme completely or to stick with it. I had an idea of painting one of the walls gray and another red (with the leftover edgy red).

I'm sorry if this post is a bit vague but I hope you can help me. I don't mind if you have a completely different idea because it's better than someone saying, "it's your room, do whatever you want."

I think there is room within the nautical theme to be more or less themed. Here are a few favorites and some are VERY nautical, but others just have that flavor.

Here's another youthful nautical themed room with some bold, ocean inspired colors.

Your sleeping area is quite narrow with limited natural light, so you might prefer to use red as an accent color for accessories.

Add a solar-tube(s) for natural light..They are very reasonably priced! I'd paint the walls and ceiling the same color of a light blue--using red as accents, not wall color. (Your blue choice is really too dark for a small space--great for the desks when white-washed!) The red, when white washed on top would be perfect!
Where's the round window? haha! Curtains would look like everyone else's bdrm, IMO
What size of bed? W/the space being so small, you don't want overkill on accessories to the point of clutter...starfish or ship's (steering)wheel (helm?)for drawer pulls. (fake) Anchor's for hanging sweater, etc...Clear vase lamp you can open and add sand and sea-shells...white-washed (looks old)med blue desk--w/white-washed RED chairs. maybe on the single window, rather than curtains, white washed (maybe turquoise?) shutters. same w/night-stand....depends on what color you paint walls. add a few awesome beach wood signs that have the weathered look.
I'd love to see the final rooms! Please post pics!

Put wall to wall drapes to widen the room, keep the walls light and use stripes on the bed...nautical will be nice

That is an extremely narrow room. It looks like you are not going to have a lot of room for anything but your bed. The second photo in the first post above look like it would have the best arrangement for your bed. Perhaps you would consider doing a "flip" of your ideas, and putting the blue on the lower one third of your walls, and a white, or the same gray from the other room, on the remainder. Otherwise, you are probably going to make the room feel smaller, in height, even if you add a line that emphasizes the length. You could do the red, white and blue accessories, like bedding, pillow, etc. and hang some nautical themed things on the walls-one set of photos I saw had an iron bed painted red, and that would definitely add some "zing." A couple of ship lanterns on either side of the window could be nice "night lights" for your viewing needs around the bed. You will only have room for very small side tables, so maybe you could have some shelves built that extend from the wall to serve as night stands. As for the other room, there are probably some great examples out here of room that have one accent wall, so you could do a search and get some ideas. I think it would be a good idea to tie the two room together with the nautical idea.

Thanks for all the great feedbacks and suggestions. (: I was thinking of putting my bed in the middle of the room and a ceiling fan will be installed some time soon (I hope). I will definitely paint the walls a lighter color and have red accents. I believe the bed will be a...queen size? I'm not quite sure. But I think that would be a good size?

I would put some solar tubes but sadly the house is all concrete so it would be difficult to install. I live on an island where typhoons (hurricane) are common and very strong.

Again, thanks for all the feedbacks and suggestions. I will definitely research some more on what I should do with my room. Any more comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. (:

A ceiling fan is definitely a good idea since you obviously live in a humid climate if you have to worry about hurricanes-I live in that kind, too, though not in an area where we usually get impacted directly-Hurricane Ike a few years ago was the one exception.
I hope that you can find at least one really fine piece of wooden furniture to go in one of your rooms, since ships often have beautiful woodwork of some kind, so that also goes with the theme.
Our den was built several decades ago out of pine, and two of the windows look like portholes. I have bought lots of things over the years to try and decorate it, but one really nice nautical item that I have always thought was a great addition is a barometer.

@karen, wow. That looks really comfortable. I probably wouldn't even get out of the bed. Aha, now that seems like something to consider as well. (: Thanks.

New addition to the room. It's where I will hang my clothes and have other sorts of things. With the extra space on the side, I might fill that up with a book shelf or something.

    @Hevron--wow! your ceiling is concrete?

One thing you could do to widen the room is add horizontal paneling (painted white) to that window wall. I'd go with 4" - 5" width planks to really make an impact and it will give the room a subtle nautical flair.

Glad you liked it Hevron. I somehow felt this would appeal to you. :)

@debbie, yes it is concrete. (:

I don't know but I think I'll just combine the ideas. For the 'bed' part of room, I may make it a dark color so it'll look more of a cave and such because I don't think I'll have visitors go there to relax and stuff. The space is too small for anyone to lounge around in that area so I will just make it more of a cave and calm room for me. Then for the bigger area of my room, I will put a light color, possibly the color, Ice Floe ( http://tinyurl.com/bqptdpg), and the color, Twilight Chimes ( http://tinyurl.com/cesvur3) to be on my accented wall. I might also paint Twilight Chimes all over my 'bed' part of the room and hang some plain Christmas Lights around and hopefully find 'light house' lamps.

keep your colours neutral as your rooms are narrow and use accessories with colour .

You may want to check out magicmurals.com. They have so many awesome ocean/beach/ship/dock wall murals . I like the 'coziness' people keep calling 'small', I think with the mural, it would be like being on a ship.

Since the room is so narrow, consider mirroring (or a large mirror) on one long wall, broken up by rope lattice or chevron wood strips. And open bookshelves on short wall around window?

Nautical decor is also a great choice for kids' rooms as they have an inherent love for the beach and the sea and are attracted to the bright colors. And what toddler doesn't love building castles in the sand and sailing ships in rain puddles?

A nautical decor scheme is easy to achieve as well as inexpensive. It can all be done with accessories so if you change your residence, you can pack up your decorating scheme and take it with you. Ships' wheels provide a dramatic center of interest that changes any room from boring to chic. Add nautical clocks in your kitchen, living room and bedrooms. And you can enhance the appearance of a nautical clock by trimming it with sea shells. You can also add a nautical touch to mirrors and picture frame by trimming them with sea shells. However, ships' wheels and nautical clocks don't need to be confined to the house. They're also perfect for a patio or deck.

Then complete your nautical decor with ships' models.. Ships' models are also versatile. Not only do they complement nautical decor but they add a touch of tradition to practically any decorating scheme. You can find early sailing ships' models and civil war ships' models that are beautiful displayed on a mantle or on top of an armoire. In a child's room you can display a collection of ships' models on a wall shelf that is mounted above the windows. Ships' models come in different sizes and styles. If historical models don't appeal, sleek modern ships' models are also available to add a little pizzazz to modern minimalist decor.

Once you have chosen your accessories, you can complete your nautical decor scheme with the addition of brightly colored cotton pillows and a throw rug or two.
