A 2-cycle engine makes sense for a chain saw, where you have to hold the weight of the thing while you are using it. Since a tiller rests on the ground and the weight of the engine actually helps it dig in, in my opinion it doesn't make sense to use a 2-cycle engine on a tiller, even a lightweight one like a Mantis.

Someone said something somewhere else on this forum that made me think that 4-cycle Honda engines were no longer available on the Mantis tillers. Perhaps that was a misunderstanding on my part.

If you have trouble getting a Mantis with a 4-cycle Honda engine, you might consider a Honda FG110 tiller or possibly even a Red Ox tiller.

Apparently, Honda has not been able to supply enough engines. We are running into problems with other Honda equiopped products.
The new 2 cycle Mantis has a new muffler which is very quiet, probably more so than the Honda. It might have to be de-carboned more often though.
The Honda is a very nice motor but it only holds 100ml of oil. The oil must be changed every ten hours of operation or the engine won't live. We have seen a few pooched from lack of maintenance. Check the air filter frequently on either one.

I own a Mantis with the 2 cycle Echo engine and wouldn't have it any other way. It is powerful, and requires almost no maintenance.

I still need to change the oil annually in my generator, snowblower, pressure washer, motorcycles, ugh!!!

I have the 2-cycle Mantis and it is one impressive piece of machinery. Strong as can be, starts easily and runs well. It's built by Echo. I also have two other machines that run on 50:1 mix so I don't mind keeping a can of it around.

One thing about the 2-cycle though, it does give of quite a bit of vibrations. Never tried the Hona version but I'd assume it would be somewhat smoother.

I live near the Mantis factory and bought it there. When I was looking, I asked about the 4-cycle Honda and was told that it's a good engine but parts, if necessary, are hard to come by. Odds are you won't need parts but if you do...

If you call to buy from Mantis direcly, ask if there are any reconditioned units available. They are pretty much as good as new and carry the same 2 year warranty and 1 year satisfaction guarantee as every other Mantis.

I'm an avid fan of the Mantis, having had and used extensively the 2-cycle Echo powered one for the past 5 years. They're great. No way would I part with it. (my wife would shoot me if I did! ~grin~)

This thing has been totally reliable, with only an occasional air filter and plug change. I've done some jobs for a neighbor, and he finally decided he needed a "mini-tiller", too. Unfortunately, he got talked into the Honda brand...he's so sorry now...they don't do the same job. The patented tine design of the Mantis, plus the Echo performance make all the difference in the world. Contrary to a comment made above, you don't need extra weight to have these little guys do their job. You'll be amazed at what you can do....including tearing up sod in previously un-tilled areas like a flower bed, or whatever. I do own and use a big tiller for the major garden area, but still would never part with my Mantis. One option I would recommend you buy is the "kickstand". It's not expensive, and it's a real convenience.

I haven't used the two-stroke model, but just started using the honda equipped 4-stroke mantis this spring and its GREAT! Starts on the first pull every time and its so much easier not having to mix the fuel and it doesn't give that 2-stroke exhaust stench either. I have to agree that the extra weight is probably more beneficial to the operation of the machine. Helps it to dig better.

Is Tanaka compatible with Ryobi attachements?

I am trying to landscape my font yard. My front yard has not been having any worked done for several years. The soil is compacted so much, it is like rock solid. Can I use Mantis 2-cycle to loose these kind of soil? My friend told me to use at least 4 o 5 horse power rototiller.
