What kind of trimmer are you looking for? A hedge trimmer, a string trimmer, those two are the first to come to my mind.

My 'guess' is string trimmer. I had a couple of Toro
electric trimmers over the years, until I finally
realized that I could cut my trimming time in half
if I didn't have to mess with a cord. Both the toro's
worked fine for a couple of years and then the lower
bushing in the motor got worn and the shaft started
wobbling and the unit vibrated badly. They put a
ball bearing on the top of the motor, but a brass
bushing on the bottom, where the most forces are
exerted. I've found this to be common practice
in most of these open frame motors, also found in
shop-vacs and other such devices. Maybe someone
that has had good luck with a corded trimmer will
let us all know which one will hold up.

I'm in the same place as the original poster.

I'm considering the Troy Built at Lowe's after comparing it to the B&D Weedhog (I think it's called). Seeing way too many issues in user reviews with the B&D so I'm thinking the Troy for almost half the price will do us just fine.
