tree dropping leaves, Why?

A flowering tree in my parents front yard is starting to drop its leaves. I'm curious why. It has been a normal spring temp wise around Chicago, however this year has had record rainfall so far this year. The tree leafed up fine and had one of its best years flowering. Any ideas why the leaves are changing now?

It's a crab that looks like it has apple scab.
