Making your own potash?

Again, I was checking out my soil test results and among the recommendations was adding potash to the soil. After looking it up online, I discovered that basically all it is is wood ashes. This led me to wonder if maybe it would be fun to make my own potash. Is it feasible to make your own potash? I mean, it just involves burning wood and collecting the ashes, right? What about paper ashes? Would it be more productive to burn my white paper junk mail and newspapers and use that ash in the garden than recycle them?

I'm just curious if anyone had any (constructive and non-judgemental) input. :) Thanks!
