Well not sure why you would dump any kind of chemicals into your goldfish tank....that may have been the problem.

Goldfish need 20 to 30 gallons of water each. A good filtration system that provides proper cleanliness and not to heavy of a flow. If you start with healthy fish and quarantine each new addition.....I don't see why any problems should arise.

Goldfish like cooler temps and pretty much adjust to any water hardness. Don't over feed and DO water changes weekly.

I think you also have to choose your source carefully. Don't buy these at some chain pet shop. Most of their goldfish are badly taken care of - and who knows what type of bacterial infections are harboring from bad water, bad food, and dead fish floating around for days. By the time you bring them home, the stress of a new environment sometimes just puts them over the edge, and before you know it, you have a sick goldfish.

Regular goldfish are very hardy - the fancier ones, less so because in the breeding the distortions that are sought sometimes create fish that are more prone to ailments like swim bladder disease. So know your sources.

Buy from a reputable shop and KEEP THE WATER CLEAN! Read all you can about goldfish, there is TONS of info on the web. Do a Google search and see and read all you can. There is no "secret".

I did everything I should have with water changes and all; the chemicals were recommended when they started displaying signs of illness. This was over several years ago when I had this type of goldfish.

I take great pride in making sure I provide the best care possible for all of my pets. The pet shop I got them from is considered one of the best in the area, they have been in business for over 30 years; but, maybe as someone stated here, it was just a bad bunch of goldfish I got.

I simply don't want to go thru that again, I treated those fish better than I did my ex-husband, who didn't deserve what I gave him in the first place.
