Pruning prunus

Hello!

I recently bought a five-gallon birchbark cherry (prunus serrula) by mail order. It's a lovely tree but it's been very severely pruned and I'm concerned it will take on an awkward form.

All the side branches have been tipped and all but two are on the left side of the tree. The leader has recently been headed back and there is a long sprout that emerges below the heading cut (on the left of course), rises upward at about a 20 degree angle, and then curves back to the right--so it's kind of sickle-shaped. That's the closest thing to a leader the tree currently has.

My question is: should I just leave the poor tree alone for a few years and hope it recovers, or are there small cuts I can make now (or this winter, if appropriate) that will result in a dramatically improved form later?
