I'm not an expert, but in the interests of not encouraging soft growth which might freeze over the winter, and because you might have some die-back in the winter anyway, I would wait to do any pruning until spring. The usual good pruning practices would apply - have sharp tools, take out dead and crossing or rubbing branches, open up the middle, take branches back to the trunk or to a larger diameter branch, don't leaves stubs.
