If possible relocate the glass storage units to underneath the staircase if that is the only spot available for them.
If the figurines don't fit there what's next thing to place under so as not to leave a vacuum space
  • 11 years ago
The space was designed to remain open. Look at the traffic pattern to the door.
Leave the space open. Put the figurines on open shelving in her bedroom where she can enjoy looking at them, and dusting them. That way they don't look out of place with the very modern bones of the public spaces.

Hi ejose, thanks for inviting me here :-) I'd have to agree with the others though that it would be nicer to leave the space under the stairs open. But maybe you can place one or two (depending on the size of the cabinets and the size of the collection) glass display cabinets along the wall at the end of the hall?

I would leave the space - it seems to have a nice flow from one room to the next and with a console table or display case, it may feel a little too crammed.. good luck with your project! :)

Great stair, great space, but neither those figurines nor that cabinet belong in this room. They will simply look incongruous. If you wish to soften the space a bit, you could put a large plant under the stair, being careful to keep it out of the walkway.

Please give this wonderful contemporary design its due.

Don't distract from this staircase. I would put the "Nic-Nacs" in another room.

Other option is a cabinet on the wall futher down on the left and I would select a wood tone that works with the staircase.

Maureen's cabinet does have a better colour than the wooden ones I showed.
Tks for suggestion but the light switch and socket will be covered once I place the cabinet on that wall. I think your color ms carolin will match to the existing color of our kitchen cabinets and dining table & chair wenge
  • 11 years ago
Maybe a narrow, tall cabinet like the one from Ikea will fit on that wall and doesn't cover up the light switch. I just realized that the carriages probably won't fit into that kind of cabinet though.
    Hmm...
Is there space for the collection anywhere else in the home? What is opposite the stairs? Is there a wall or is it very open plan?

Opposite the stairs are the dining table & lanai

This is how it looks like when it's still bare can't find a better place to put her collections
  • 11 years ago
    Nice!

If you can find one or two simple looking glass cabinet(s) that can hold her collection and that will fit under the stairs, by all means, put them there. I would go for something very transparent, like the Ikea one, so not with a wooden frame.

I'm assuming she wants the figurines behind glass. If she doesn't mind to have them out in the open, you could consider glass shelves mounted 'floating' on the wall under the stairs.

Another idea would be to have floating wooden shelves on the wall with the switch and socket. That will kind of repeat the rhythm of the stairs. You could have lights under the shelves too.

With seeing your entire room, it helps to know that you have very modern tastes. In order to compliment your room, I would just add some thicker floating shelves that are configured to compliment the slant of the staircase and the different sizes of the figurines.

Designers have their aesthetic, and you have your mother. Displaying the figurines might not yield the perfect look, but if your mom wants it, I would certainly have that discussion with her before relegating her collection to some out-of-the-way place.

I like the idea of a cabinet, but the one from IKEA is really not all that stable. It wobbles big-time, as I recall. Check it out personally before buying.

Good luck! I'll bet there are lots of ways to make everyone happy.

After seeing the broader picture of the whole room, I notice there is a space between the sliding doors (?) and a window (?). Could you put a curio cabinet there to put at least some of your mom's things in? Obviously, her style and yours are worlds apart but maybe that area would be sufficient to make her feel more comfortable.

How would your mother feel about breaking her large collection up into smaller ones? Large displays of anything run the risk of losing all impact and looking like an elephant in the room. Small displays of 3 to 5 figurines each would be easier to find cabinets for. Small corner cabinets with glass doors and adjustable shelves spread throughout the rooms would show nicely. Each could have one of the heavier, taller pieces on the bottom, and smaller ones higher. A plant like a Boston Fern on top of the cabinets would really soften the look and tie them into the rooms. Many times, this type of cabinet has mirrors, I think they sometimes look better if that is changed out to a wallpapered panel. In this instance, maybe something that looks like cream or taupe silk. I see touches of lavender, so maybe a soft grayish green would work. This collection needs to learn to play well with others and not be the gang that took over the schoolyard!

Is there a possibility of getting different shelving on which to place the figurines. If so you could do something like what I've attached.

Wow I'm overwhelmed w/ all ur ideas and suggestions if only I can inject it all in this room
  • 11 years ago
Hi ms Maureen the pics of floating shelves is already on my mind but how I will arrange and how many shelves are ideal holds me back then. until you and ms carolins suggest a curio or glass cabinet display to place on the end of the wall w/c is also a good idea to protect it from dust but it will cover the switch light & electric outlet and will create traffic on the hall as cited by artemano. Now I'm more confuse
  • 11 years ago
Whynottryit the wall in between the window and sliding door is only a foot apart from the sofa. There's no enough space there to put a curio or side table
  • 11 years ago

A plant and/or a hat rack with either a bench or a wooden chest/footlocker under the high end of the steps -- not anything bulky and not anything under the low end of the steps -- would look better under the stairs.

Putting anything tall or bulky under those stairs will destroy the effect intended by the design of the stairs and look like clutter.

You need to keep figurine collections behind glass or they become a real chore to dust.

Consider creating a glass case room divider for the figurines the height and width of a sofa or loveseat you put it behind. Upscale kitchen overhead cabinets with glass fronts with a mantel as the top and a base with baseboard could serve this purpose.
