If basically everything is white, than I think hardwood is the right choice. It's really in right now and I think it would make a great contrast with the white.

No. I think that color is perfect. If it's a very small space, than lighter hardwood is the way to go:)

A living space that is 500sf seems small until you try to pay for marble/procelain tile and the labour for installation. For a tiled area, 500sf (in Canada and many cool/cold areas) that is quite large with a pretty heavy installation price (tile and stone installation is 3x - 5x the cost of labour for wood).

You would be surprised at the final costs when comparing wood (rather easy with rather easy labour costs) vs. stone/tile (complicated install with labour costs to match). Depending on where you are, the wood is more appropriate in cool climates whereas the stone/porcelain is more appropriate for warm climates.

You could always install a wood looking porcelain tile. It's a very popular look in our area. If you're concerned about it being cold, you can always use an under floor heating element. One of the great benefits to using a high quality porcelain tile is that you're not going to have any maintenance. It's stain resistant and isn't going to scratch and wear like real wood.

If you are looking for the overall best product for long term cost efficiency & maintenance then the only choice is tile. Hardwood in the kitchen is not practical as it is an area that can be prone to water damage. I would recommend a nice hardwood floor. A wide plank white oak is a great look and it is very popular at the moment.
