Big Garlic

This is the biggest garlic we ever grew. Last fall when I was planting some persian star I noticed an elephant garlic had already come up in the bed so i left it . It had been at least 2 years since we had planted elephant in that part of the field. It was harvested this week. With the stalk on it weighs a little more than 1 1/2 lbs.I laid a dvd beside of it to give you an idea of the size.

Wow, very nice! Roast that baby up with a sprinkling of dried rosemary, salt & pepper, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil......reach for the goat cheese and crackers and a good bottle of red vino.......I can practically taste it now!

My garlic are real small. Did you fertilize?

Sigh. I heard that there were murmured complaints, suggesting that steroid testing be done in the future. Baseball, football, now garlic competitions. What's the world coming to?

This fall, I'm going for "big garlic" (thats like "big hair" down in Texas). I tilled in at least a cubic yard of compost in my bed, which was already pretty fertile, and planted Music Pink, and instead of 4 across, 4 inches apart, I set them out 2 across, 10" apart.

How big do they get?
