Alpines & Rock Gardens

advice please

I have these 2 large rock piles at the corners of my backyard. Since we moved it we have pretty much just tried to cut the grass and weeds down around it. But I would prefer to ptu something in that will be colorful, yet.. won't get high. Any suggestions? here are the pics. sorry they are fuzzy...it was pouring out when I took the pics. lol
