how does redbud seed naturally germinate in the wild? if i do not scarify i know it can take 3 years to germinate so how must i plant i want it to take that long.
Scarifying is actually pretty easy - just rub lightly with medium sandpaper until you are through the seed coat in one spot. I believe they also need stratifying (cold) so I would plant several seeds to a pot and leave them outside over the winter, not letting them dry out and protecting them from foraging squirrels, etc. You should get sprouts over the spring months - but don't give up on them if it takes until summer or even the next spring.
If you want to grow one of the cultivars, be aware that seedlings may not come true - the leaf color of 'Forest Pansy' seedlings can vary, and I would imagine the colors of the blooms of the other selections may vary as well. It may be more interesting, but it may not be the same as the parent tree.
