You'd have to wait till next Saturday, but Singh Farms, Thomas Road just east of the 101, has what they call fine compost. A year or two ago, I asked the guy doing the loading for the best stuff for garden beds. He sold me bags of the stuff he said they used. Horrible. Just sand and sticks. It's been sitting here rotting (??) for all this time and it's no better.

Today, I got the fine stuff, nice and black and soft. $15 for what appears to be a 3 cu/ft. bag.

Thanks for the information. I am not sure how they can call the stuff for sale around here garden soil when it is just more like a mulch.

Miracle Grow is fairly controversial, though I haven't kept up with all the reasons why. Anyhoo, if you want to buy "garden soil" that you plan to mix with the dirt in your own garden, it is fine textured. Don't use it in containers.

Depends on where you live! If you don't do your own composting you can always check out bulk soil companies and if you live in Tucson you can get a hold of Students for Sustainability though the U of A agriculture extension office. Also if you have existing dirt you would such as the one you described, with mulch like products. You can add amendments such as worm castings, bat guano, well composted manures, or beneficial microbes to help break down and add nutrients to your soil.

Are you looking to amend your soil or something for boxes? My community garden plot had been a field of grass many years ago with nothing grown on it since so I started with basic dirt. I tilled in some compost provided by the garden, some bagged Amend from HOme Depot and cow manure and planted it. I got very good results from that first planting then dug in some rabbit manure and planted another seasons vegs and now have very nice "black dirt" after 1 year. I plan to add a little compost and rabbit manure before each planting as our heat eats up organic matter very quickly. Good luck and hope you find what you need.
