A few new things

13 years ago

A few new plants in the past month, and I can only hope they do well.

Aloe arenicola, which I understand can be very touchy. I might ask for people's personal experience with this guy if that's alright. Slow grower, I understand, so a few years from now it might actually look like something. I've read, too, that it can be sensitive to high temps.

{{gwi:482453}}

A fairly plain little Aloe hybrid. Green, small at the moment (haven't seen a mature plant), and very subtle pink edges.

And thanks to RoRo's help,

Gasteraloe 'Green Ice,' and such a magical green.

{{gwi:482456}}

possible Dudleya virens var. hassei Dudleya edulis

{{gwi:482457}}

two Dyckia hybrids

+ something old that's everybody's favorite (S. multiceps)

    Nice plants. Gotta love those s. multiceps. Lost mine during this cold winter.
    I think your "dudleya virens" looks more like a tylecodon, although it could be either. The dudleya seems to have flatter leaves whereas tylecodon has more circular leaves like yours.

    Dyckia's on my list of want to get some! Very scarce here, but lovely plants - really good group. Did not have any luck with the arenicola seeds I got, so not much help, but grows at sea-level in more or less same region as Cono's! Low winter-rainfall area with part of the distribution area in the mist belt. Same sandy regions as Fenestraria as well. My guess would be light waterings rather than deep 3day wet waterings.

    They are all beauties, Colleen! Glad to see the new ones potted up. =)

    I think I gave you a bum steer on the Dudleya. Pretty sure that one is Dudleya edulis, common name, Fingertips. Zech made a good assumption about it seeming to be Tylecodon because of the leaf shape. My brain wasn't functioning when I mailed those out. I have seen these in bloom. They are Duduleya. Sorry it isn't the hassei you wanted. :(

    More info on that Dudleya...with several other common names. The plant can look green or light grey.
    See link below.

    Oh, I didn't have any hopes about Dudleya--haven't seen any D.s I wouldn't adore! I really do not care. Truly. Still super happy. I'll update that ID.

    Thank you for the arenicola advice. I sure hope I can please it.

    Your little Aloe may be 'Helen Haage'. I have one I believe is that, but never figured positively. Mine turns light orange. =)

  • 13 years ago

    Oh, it's actually turning slightly orange right now, with what I figured is a little sun stress. Thank you!

    So nice, Ladies! Every picture is beautiful.

    Nice plants. :)

    What is the stone block in the first pot?

  • 13 years ago

    Thanks, guys! (Quite orange, RoRo, but with your sun I wouldn't expect any less!)

    I wish I could remember specifically what stone that is, Paul. It comes in handy that I collected rocks like crazy when I was a little kid; I can use them now. Just am not sure on the type of agate that is. The stone in with the Dudleya is the same type, I believe.

    Very nice plants you have there. Love the dyckias, just picked up a few of those.

  • 13 years ago

    I'd like to see 'em, chadec! :)

    I adore that orange aloe. But then , I just love winter stress. I wish I were that pretty when I shivered in the sun.

    I was going to ask about your rocks, too, Colleen! Love them! I got a great one from Jeff! Will have to get out & look for some to use.

    I believe Chad is still on his HONEYMOON (till today anyway), so you might have to wait for those pix. :D If you come back to this thread, Congrats on your nuptials, Chad! (I'm sure I'd get in trouble if I made a separate post for you. Sorry for piggybacking, Colleen.)
