rooting grafted cacti top?

I've just bought one of those cacti that are grafted onto - is it a cereus stem? It isn't one of the gymno's with the fluorescent colors, but a green...possibly rebutia or mammilaria. Nice ball of soft, silky spines.

Anyway, I want to re-root it on it's own, without the host. Should I slice it off, or try to disengage it from the other cacti? Not too sure how it will come apart...it will come apart, but it might get ugly. What would be the better route overall for the eventual rooting of the top? I've not rooted a top before, but have rooted many things. Some tips on that would be appreciate as well. Can't do pics...camera has disappeared. Would rather root cacti than look for camera lol!
