Moving, need advice

Hi all,

I'm planning to move from Southern California to the Seattle area, and obviously a lot of my plants that can live outdoors here won't make it there. I'm thinking of just taking some small agaves and maybe some haworthias that can live indoors, but what would be the best way to sell off the rest of the small collection of succulents that I can't bring? I've never done Ebay and would rather not deal with shipping. What to do?

Thanks,

Ken

    Hi,
I would advice you to get in touch with your local C&S society, they will know what to do with your plants. Or try to contact a nursery, garden center, landscaper. Or some type of 'garage sale'. I'm just giving some ideas.

craigslist.org? especially if there is a more local location listing, like if you live near a big city.

    Hello,
Ken, I live in Seattle. We are zone 5A-ish, with lots of winter wet. There is a small but active C&S club up here. If you are interested:

I bring most of my C&S indoors for winter, under grow lights, and then back out for the summer. Alot of people do the overwinter greenhouse thing too. Just some ideas.

Here is a link that might be useful: Cascade Cactus & Succulent Society

Your local C&S society will certainly help get rid of them, but don't expect to make a bunch money, unless they are rare or really old. Craigslist is another place you'll be able to unload them, but the prices will be even worse for you there.

eBay will generate the most money, but is a big hassle when shipping and dealing with customers is considered. But since you are selling to markets that don't really have access to cheap C&S's, you can ultimately demand a better price.

Finally, I am always interested in acquiring plants, and given that I live here in L.A., maybe I can take a couple off your hands. Shoot me an email if interested:

I moved from Arizona to Minnesota four years ago, and got the Central Arizona C&SS to help with a sale. I didn't have anything very rare, as I was just a beginner, but made a couple of hundred dollars. It made me feel good to know that people were taking the plants who knew what to do with them.

Have a plants sale in your driveway, I do this when my wife has garage sales all the time and never have a problem with selling some of my plants.

The recommendation for a local C&S society is a good one. Some societies will auction off plants with some of the proceeds going to the society and the rest to the seller.

Have you considered bartering? I have done this many time with my orchids -- trading either for orchids I didn't have or even for other plants entirely (hostas, hoyas, bulbs, etc). For instance, last fall I traded a nice blooming size orchid division for a couple of hoya cuttings. Did the other person get the better end of the deal from a monetary point? Quite probably. But I got something I wanted for something I needed to 'lose' in order to regain some growing space. Both of us were very happy with our deal.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. I'll have to decide what I can bring with me, and what will have to go. It's hard for me to part with some favorites that I might not be able to find again, especially the bigger variegated stuff. I just don't want to end up killing them in the move though.
