Gophers will eat anything, Elvie. I don't plant my blueberries in the ground since it's so hard to keep the soil acidic enough. I can be done, but it's a LOT of work. Easier to grow them in pots in California, so that might be a consideration if you're concerned about gophers. Can't speak to raspberries, but if they're near gopher activity, they will be a target.

Aren't berries in the rose family? Gophers love rose roots, I'm sure they'd love berry roots too.

When I planted my blackberries I put them in gopher baskets. So far so good.

Well if so, they don't seem to make a dent in the neighbors blackberries which border and creep under my fence.

im planting rasberries and wonder the same...I know they haven't touched the blackberries in 20 years,no gopher baskets for them either...they wont touch daffodils either

you have to make your own baskets out of chicken wire. You can make them any size to fit trees, shrubs, whatever.

RATS!!! I was hoping to avoid more of that...I planted 20 cherry/15 apple,6 peat,5 peach,13 blueberry,5 kiwi,3 orange,1 guava trees all with 15 gallon gopher cages...awwww heck I guess 6 more wont hurt >:o ok thankyou

Hi Nil13, I do indeed make my own, but there is a point where it's "pointless". Its easier to line the bottom of a raised bed for example.

Another concern is recently I had a gopher walk up a raised bed wall and tunnel down into the bed avoiding the HW cloth underneath. I hope this does not become a skill, it won't be inherited in this case anyhow :)

ok,last but not least...what kind of fertilizer? ive the cottonseed I use for blueberrys and the general I use for fruit trees both organic

also...what do you think of weed guard? ive an extra roll of it?

Weed guard is for paths and patios imo.

Darrell, I was talking to Chad about making baskets that fit more than bulbs. IDK how gophers treat raspberries.

Chad, yeah a raised bed can work if you want a raised bed. Otherwise a gopher basket is often necessary in order to enable a tree or shrub to get established. It rusts away by the time the shrub can deal with the gopher predation.

these will last for 20 years or so,they are made with a good type of steel,they are all in the ground,worked under the moonlight,have 9 cages ready to go...will the cottonseed fertilizer or a different be better?
