Lithops

Hello,

I am a collector of sorts of "unique" plants. I am mostly into carnivorous plants and have a decent collection now. I saw a picture of a lithop the other day and though, "I have to get one of those!" :) Could someone please point me to some information on their cultivation? Also, where can one buy a Lithop from a reputable online source? I live in Ohio, zone 6. Is it possible for me to grow one outside in the summer?

Here is a source that should get you started, it includes a brief guide to cultivation.

You can certainly put them outside for the summer, but they will need to be protected from rain, or at least from 90% of rain. They absolutely need to be kept dry in winter, and best to keep them frost free also.

One Lithops, two Lithops, a hundred Lithops, oops I need a bigger greenhouse!

I checked out that website, and it seems to be a good place to buy them. The pictures on their website and a few others, though make it seem like lithops are pretty small. I've never seen one in person, so how big are they? Is there a pretty decent sized one that is good for beginners?

There are so many types of lithop compared to most carnivorous plants. What type would you recommend for a beginner that wants a nice looking decent size plant?

    Thanks,

Each Lithops head is one to two inches across, a few species slightly smaller. Seedlings may take three or four years to reach that size. Old plants will often form a clump of multiple heads, but a plant more than 6" across is very unusual.

I like L. lesliei as a good starter plant. Or you might prefer the appearance of L. hookeri, L. aucampiae, or L. pseudotruncatella, all are easy species. If you want white flowers instead of yellow, L. salicola is the most robust.

After looking around, the watering instructions are kind of confusing at first. How will I know when to water my lithops? I heard that it is when the plants are wrinkled in the morning. Is there a good rule of thumb here?

I can't wait to get them! They ship today! :)
