I would not clump cannas together because they will be trying to form clumps of their own as the rhizomes grow and send up new shoots. They will be more vigorous and productive if you give them each the space to develop. They will be uncomfortable and competing with each other if you don't.

I am a complete newbie - don't know a thing, and came here for answers - but with that said, here is something interesting. The planting instructions that came with my dwarf bulbs read:

"Container Planting: Plant bulbs close together for best results."

I'm guessing that's wrong?!?

Well, I'll never find out about the spacing issue -- I caved, & planted them well-spaced in the ground, according to the directions on the package. This was over 2 weeks ago, & when I hadn't seen anything happening, I dug one back up to look. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but there were no "eyes" or "buds" or any signs of life. They looked exactly as when I planted them. I see a return package & hope for refund in my near future....Ugh! So disappointing!

It's the stupid weather that's slowing them all down ferncreek. :\ I would give them more time.

I've had some in pots for over a month now and they are just sitting there. They were potted up at the end of April when I got a few sprouts from a bunch that I tried to start up in bags of peat placed on my apt. heater unit back in March. Since then, my 2 pots of them outside have stalled. :\ Last week's way below temps seemed to set so much back. Hopefully it'll warm up during June and they will get moving again. I expect that they may be growing some roots too.
