Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum! I am familiar with cacti and succulents but have never grown them, although, there is a sedum and hens and chicks (AKA cat and kittens) in the garden.

As houseplants, I only have a Thanksgiving cactus that I bought last year at a local grocery store. Most of my other houseplants are hoyas but I also have a white crown of thorns and others like a croton and a snake plant. Now, I'm going to add a new cacti to my collection: epiphyllum oxypetalum! Despite the limited space that I have, I finally gave in to it (reason: the flowers of course!). I'll be getting some cuttings here soon. Maybe in the future, when I have room, I'll get an orange flowered epi.

If I have any questions, I'll be sure to ask.

You have limited space and you get an Epiphyllum oxypetalum ... a true cactus fan.

LOL "A true cactus fan"!

Well, I do admire cacti and succulents but the night-blooming cereus/queen-of-the-night is the one that lured me in! The only other night blooming plant I grow is the annual moonflower vine, (Ipomoea alba), and I don't get to enjoy the flowers long enough before the frost. I hear that the fragrance on oxypetalum is really something!

E. oxypetalum does indeed have a strong, very pleasant fragrance. Far better than many other flowers described as "sweet", "fantastic" etc. by overenthusiastic owners.

Uh oh, epiphyllums are addictive! Then there are all the other jungle cactus: Aporocactus, Hatiora, Hylocereus, Rhipsalis, Schlumbergera, et al.

I probably shouldn't mention EpiForums... ;)

LOL Andrew! Epis aren't the only plant I know of that's addictive. The hoya bug bit me first and now I'm thinking of at least growing one or two epiphyllums for my collection. I already have a Thanksgiving cactus and seen pictures of other cacti flowers in my houseplant books. The other cacti flowers that caught my are rat-tail, peanut and sea urchin cacti. I have to say epiphyllum flowers would top my list though. I have yet to see them in real life, but I can't wait!

"one or two epiphyllums"

LOL, they're like chips, you can't have just one or two. :)
