Free cacti

I had these cactus given to me about 3 weeks ago and IMO they are in rough shape. They were paired up, one columnar type and one barrel type, in large plastic bins. I imediatly removed them from the bin only to find that both plants were potted in a 8in pot. The root balls were hard like rock, I decided to just split the roots with a shovel so I could seperate the two plants. All went well I put them in their own pots with a very fast draining mix. I waited just over two weeks then gave them a good watering. Here you just never see cactus that are this big, I couldn't say no. Does anyone have any other suggestions to get these old plants growing again?

I think this is a type of ferocactus, am I right? There were two of this type, this is the larger one. It stands 2ft above the soil and measuring with a flexible tape, 42in around. It was covered in dried flower buds when I got it. I hope it flowers again.

I don't know what kind of cactus these are, any ideas? The hairy one seem to have something on the surface, it is flakeing, it's hard to describe.
